How do you tell whether someone has a REAL grasp of a foreign language? Ask them to tell a joke!...well, I told my FIRST CHINESE JOKE Yesterday evening. Though you wont find it amusing at the least (out of context), it was funny at the moment.

We were standing in the elevator and forgot to press the button...so instead of going up we went down...."-1, -2, -3, -4, -5" ..... I told my buddies (a mix of Chinese, German, and United-Statesian) that the door would open to hell, the devil would say "Come in"....and I'd respond...."No, No, I'm just looking....." all in decent Chinese (minus the words devil and hell).

Yes...I know...NOT FUNNY - but at the moment we got a good laugh. The point is not the joke....but the fact that I'm picking up on things around here. My Chinese is miserable....but less miserable than my Swahili and Hindi (languages I've never encountered).
