The royal throne.....the chinese watering hole......I apologize for posting this directly after discussing chicken feet and pig intestines, but it is a very important subject and unfortunately too few guidebooks address it. Most toilets are squat toilets like in the top picture. I don't know what the deal is, some people tell me it's healthier for your body, others say it is more sanitary, I personally think it's very good exercise. It's quite a challenge to keep your balance and not fall into the toilet. It would be very hard to explain to my coworkers why I'm covered in mud. Additionally, it takes a lot of hand-eye coordination to keep your clothing out of "the line of fire".
Fortunately....my toilet in the apartment is a normal Western style toilet. It is a prized posession in China and I was very thrilled when I saw it. Every evening I thank god for my good fortune and pray that my toilet does not have plumbing problems. So far god has been cooperative.
Below is an interesting article about a mishap that occured in a nearby city. This is definitely not an issue that I want to encounter during my stay.
